Hi, 2004 this was about the time caravans started to be fitted with the built in gas regulator i.e. the regulator is not connected directly to gas cylinder but fitted on to caravan. this did cause flame die back due to faults in regulator or pipe work. on lighting gas flame was ok but then died back as not enough gas got through consistently. to check light oven until flame drops then light hob burners as well see what happens you may find all flames are low if so its main gas feed problem. see caravan talk web site or search caravan regulator faults on google

What 'albee' is saying is correct but there is a little more detail regarding this problem. The gas regulator was indeed connected directly to the gas cylinder in a horizontal position and there was never a problem but around 2004 Truma changed the way the gas was delivered from the cylinder to the appliances by fitting a regulator in the vertical position to the caravan bulkhead (the part between the front locker and the caravan interior) and then connecting it by gas pipe to the regulator from the gas cylinder. After several months of buying the caravan people were reporting gas problems identical to yours which after constant investigation found that there was a sludge build up in the pipes which was never evident previous to the new installation. Apparently, Avondale caravans were affected more than other makes merely because of where the regulator was installed which was in a higher position but because they ceased production the ongoing gas problem came to an abrupt halt. Therefore, many Avondale owners may still have the problem especially if the previous owners only ever used electric hook up and not the gas supply as the fault would have not been detected. This is more likely to be what the problem is so replacing the thermostat won't cure the root cause of the problem.
The regulator and pipes will firstly need to be replaced but that won't rectify the ongoing problem so what you need to do now it to take steps to find out how the sludge problem was rectified which if you are a member of either the 'Caravan Club' or 'Camping & Caravanning Club' then contacting their technical team maybe a good start. My caravan is a 1999 model so didn't have this problem so can't offer any further advice on this but being a member of various caravanning clubs has it's merits because you get to hear the ongoing problems first hand but don't know what or how the problem was cured.

Tango 55 you say a sludge problem.??? so where does this sludge come from. I read an article in one of the caravan magazines some years ago on this subject,
Were the gas suppliers were blaming the regulator manufacturers and they were blaming the gas bottle
re-fillers.

I have never had a bulkhead regulator to pieces but have striped the old type which fitted direct to the gas bottle. The contents were a diaphragm a filter and a load of cotton wool the diaphragm regulated a needle valve.

Why did I strip it because my two burner camping stove would not work on both burners at same time all brand new and I was 200 miles from supplier and had three hungry kids to feed. however I removed approx. 50% of cotton wool and hey presto it worked.

So my point is are these bulkhead regulators fitted with too much filtration or not enough, where the gas bottles contaminated with rust (STEEL BOTTLES) and oil from compressor carry over which made this sludge

I personally have not experienced this problem after buying a new caravan which came fitted with a bulkhead regulator as I opted for glass fibre bottles and have swopped from van to van when required.

Most likely the problem had been sorted when you bought your caravan because that's why you have had no problems. Like I said in my first post, Truma and the caravan manufacturers must have done something to correct the problem but what that actually was I don't know.
As far as I am aware, the problem was to do with fixing the regulator above the cylinder and possibly in a vertical position too which could have something to do with weight and gravity which the laboratories would have eventually found the underlying fault. That's why the point of blame was passed round because none of them wanted to take any responsibility in paying for rectification in the recalls.
The OP could call to Truma customer services by phone which may be a step in the right direction.

Posting links or material from other camping forums is forbidden so just to help a little further on the matter, if you enter a Google search 'Liquid in Gas Pipe - Caravan Chat - Caravan Talk' you will see other comments regarding this problem that occurred around the year 2004.
