i recently bought a 1995 avondale - we have already had several weekends away in it and all was well...however we got it serviced at weekend and its damp - quote the man who did it "its rotten, wont last u more than 1 - 2 years) which isnt a problem because we had only planned to buy it to see how we liked caravans...

he did mention that if we go down a pot hole the front end could collapse and its really worried us - i can tell there is damp but its not like ive seen on you tube - its not soaking and discoloured and although with force i might be able to put my fist through it, its doesn't seem too bad to me -

can anyone tell me what the dangers are? are we likley to hit a pot hole and the van collapse? or are we being over cautious?

Yeah but does anyone have any experience of this? All the forums and webpages I've found never mention this?? It's not that I don't believe him i just wonder if he's covering all possibilities so we can't say "u didn't tell us that"

Is this even a possibility? We viewed a lot worse damp caravans and people must still use them? Plus the fact he said wed get another 1-2 years?

To clarify I'm not asking wether or not to believe him I just wanted to know if anyone had heard of this before?

I suppose I'm wondering if people drive around in similar vans?

My sisters last van had damp all the way down one of the side walls. The last time she towed it to a site, all was fine, until someone leaned on the door frame and the side of the caravan came off! Not so you would notice on first inspection though. There was a great big draught under the beds that night, on investigation, the side wall wasn't attached to the floor (you could see daylight through it), and would maybe have come loose completely in the end.

Don't forget, however, that the wardrobes, seats and internal walls, etc, are actually attached very firmly to the outside walls in loads of places and therefore, the front end most likely wouldn't collapse as such, but just detach itself from the side walls. I would check to see what's attached on the inside of your front end.

I've heard of someone who glued blocks of wood on the inside of the walls where wall meets front end with screws and Gorilla glue to strengthen them and hold them together as well.

Its also your Licence should the van start shedding parts on the motorway, and they do shake and vibrate when being towed, get another inspection if you're doubting his word.

parts for these are notoriously hard to source, best advice is ebay it and buy a wastemaster. They last longer and are fully serviceable, this is what makes them so popular.
