Hi All,
Does anyone had any advise I could give my neighbour, he has 2 splits in the side of his caravan around the top corners of the door aperture. The aluminium has actually split, one split is about 1" and the other is around 3". they look like stress fractures, is there any way to stop this from getting worse and what if any could be done to repair.
I have never seen this before, has anyone had this problem?
Appreciate any advise

Hi zivadog,
There is damp around the door and the awning rails, does this indicate the timber frame has become weak allowing the structure to move, creating the fractures?

Repair / reinforce the timber structure, then a reasonably straightforward way to repair the aluminium is to get a rectangle of aluminium skin from a caravan breaker, large enough to cover from roof down to a few inches below top of door, and a few inches wider than the door. Fold side edges over to get a neat line, and bond it over the damaged area with sikaflex, tucking top and bottom under the door frame and awning rail.
if it's an old caravan and he just wants to repair the cracks without re skinning, drill a small hole at the very ends of the cracks, that will prevent them propagating any further.then use a body filler(as above)sand down and paint,as for the damp problem,as long as the frame is solid,it will dry out when the cause is repaired
It might be check frame for damp before doing repair to outside.my friend had these and did nothing about them and one day leaned o her door and the door and frame fell out. It was damp.just check cos i would hate it to happen to anyone else.if not its a quich job good luck
