I live in North Cheshire and I always used to go up the M56, through Stockport and down the A6 to get to the Buxton area.
But many a time we've been delayed in Stockport, so last time I tried M6 to Knutsford, then A537 via Macclesfield and over the Cat And Fiddle to Buxton ... we were a bit wary but it turned out to be a doddle and I'll be using that route in future.
Or, seeing as you're heading south of Buxton, you could try the Macclesfield and Leek route (A523 and A53).
