I have recently bought a Selfsat Snipe Fully Automatic Satellite Antenna and had it mounted on the roof of my caravan, I have now decided to change my caravan and need a new mounting plate. I can get one for £99 but wondered if anyone knows where I can get one cheaper. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Tammie, sorry can't help with your query but if you don't mind me asking, what is your opinion of the Snipe?
On our recent holiday a neighbouring caravan had one, he had just newly bought it, so using it for first time but he spoke highly of it. I've had a search around the web for reviews etc Most threads end up with loads of posters commenting about the cost rather than the performance.
I did notice one online seller, Red Apple, is now showing a disclaimer that if this unit is permanently mounted to a UK vehicle the warranty will be invalid. Something to do with bumpy roads dislodging gears.
Would appreciate the views of someone who has used one.
Thanks

Hi
Don't mind at all.
We have recently been to western Brittany and couldn't fault it, although I am not expecting it to be much use further south.
Also used it in England a few times and so far really pleased with it - so quick and easy.
Must admit I don't know anything about the disclaimer though.

When I was looking for reviews on the Snipe I found more info on the motor home sites than I did on caravan forums. Have you tried looking at the motorhomefacts forum? Might get some idea on a base plate there.

The unit I referred to earlier was being used on a site in the south Loire valley, about an hour's drive south of Tours, and they were getting full range of channels there. Imagine further south than that you would start to lose channels.

We had a Snipe on our motorhome, brilliant. We have now gone back to caravanning.
Snipe no longer make the small version for roof mounting so they no longer supply the mounting plate. If you mount it on the roof it will almost certainly affect the guarantee. You are advised(by them)to buy the larger size which is also heavier and more expensive.
Although we loved the Snioe we have decided not to buy another one. We pondered whether to buy the small one and buy a plate elsewhere and have it on the roof of the caravan.Eventually decided against it as it's too expensive not to have the guarantee. We are managing very well at the moment with the caravan aerial.
Regarding the mounting plate I don't think they are easy to get hold of now hence the price of £99.
You could always use it as a portable unit but leaving it outside full time may not be a good idea.
