Hi all, apologies if this is posted in the wrong forum,
we are travelling to scarborough from the east midlands in a couple of days.
looking at the map i am not sure whether to go up m1, then m18 and then a1 then a64 and finally a170
or go go the slighly shorter
m1, m18 and then the a614 finally the b1258
I remember getting held up for ages around york on the a64 but i dont know whether that road is now a dual carriageway making it a quicker but longer route.
has anyone does this journey if so what are your thoughts
I go a few times a year, A1/A64 is the best way imo, just avoid going in the rush hour, mornings and evenings. Best beach,s are Cayton Bay & Filey, Cayton Bay is a fantastic beach.
We regularly go to Scarborough from Derbyshire, our route is via M1 M18 M62, A614, we then follow the signs for Bridlington and take the coast road down to Filey and onto our campsite. If you follow the signs for Scarborough, you will travel by Staxton Hill, not so bad inbound, but quite steep if your towing and your outfit is near its max limits power wise.
All the beaches in the area are fairly clean and safe, the disadvantage with Cayton Bay beach is that the access is fairly steep and not suitable for pushchairs or the less mobile person, as you have to park at the top and decend the Cliff face.

All the beaches around that part of the coast are nice fine sand we use them all from Whitby down to Bridlington. Robin Hoods bay ok for rocks pools.
Believe me, you dont have to decend the cliff face to get down onto Cayton bay beach, theres a road with a footpath down to the beach, plus you can get a cuppa and a buttie from the snack shack at the bottom.
The last time.I went to Cayton Bay I saw signs saying it was dangerous for swimming. This surprised me because I always used to swim there who we we t as a child.
Hunmanby beach, we were told by locals is not safe to swim in. We were told there have been several deaths there.
Vespa, do be telling please, how do you take a car down to Cayton beach?
I know the little site and carpark at the top that is popular with surfers, and the shack/ cafe on that part, but its over 10 years since we parked there, and then tge only way down to the beach was via a very steep Cliff path, similar to the one on Filey Brigg, not so bad on the decent on a dry day, but very difficult and slippery coming back up, especially with a pushchair or for the less mobile.

Julia, you can drive down to drop off but cant park down there, there's only 1 parking place which is taken up by the girls at the snack shack, we park at the top then walk down the road to the beach, its only a 5 min job, well worth the walk down though, the first time we went we went down the cliff face, never again lol.
