Hi,

I'm looking for my first caravan with the notion that I just need somewhere for 2 adults + 3 small children (upto 10 years?) to sleep comfortably, preferably separately (adults - kids). I don't mind everyone being a bit squished together in bed.

My husband would also like a loo I think. Everything else is surplus, unless I'm being super naive?

The car would be a big 5-7 seater so i assume that would be suitable storage or is there some unseen reason why a car should not be considered as additional living space?

The reason I want something so compact is parking it on the drive. I have a nice little nook at the side of my house about 4-5m long. I'm not sure we'd realistically use it more than 28 days a year.

I have come across the freedom sunseeker in discussions relating to 4-berth but it seems to be sold as 3-berth. I'm not sure it has a toilet too.

Can anyone make any suggestions or observations? Is there a website where you can search and compare all sorts of caravans?

Thanks

A modern Freedom caravan has a cassette toilet. If you want to sleep 2 adults and 3 kids you will have to put a couple in the awning. 1 could of course sleep in the car.

Sounds to me that you would be better off going for a Pennine Pathfinder Folding Camper.

You get two double beds, full cooker and a toilet and it folds down and so would easily park in your driveway.

We even had a motor mover fitted to ours and so it was easy to park at home and on site.

Hi I've got a sunseeker. Mines an older one which does have 4 berths (the newer ones are 3 berth). However the 4th bed is a stretcher style bunk which is only really suitable for young children. No toilet either. The freedom jetstream does have a toilet but is only 2 berth. Sterckeman used to do a small 4 berth with a toilet called the Alize 370CE not sure if they still sell anything similar? Regards Sean

The Xplore 304 is a 4 berth with a toilet (and shower, but I never use it) and the two single beds during the day become a side dinnete, great for kids to sit and draw, read etc.

Our 1997 Bailey Ranger is also a 4 berth with the side dinette bit and a large a spacious toilet area.
It is 20 foot 5 inches long.

However there are just the 2 of us (and 2 wee dugs) and so we use the side dinette as a large (I have enlarged it) single bed that stays made up.

With our previous folding camper, as the beds were permanently made up and loads of room for your 3 kids in its King Sized Double Bed and yourselves in the standard double bed, the FC would beat any 4 berth caravan hands down.

It was only because of old age and failing health that we gave up the FC for a tin top.

You will also have to bear in mind if you only have a B license and not a B+E. As if only a B and you have said you want a large 7 seater motor that the max weight permissible of the motor and the max permissible weight of the caravan you purchase added together does not push you over the top, so you need to take another test to gain the E

4 to 5m is very short. Would that include the drawbar. With 3 kids you're really looking at 5 berth. Most 4berths will be a double and 2 bunks although longer ones may give you a double which is 6 feet wide.

I think some European vans give 2 doubles.

An FC sounds suitable or a dandy if you want one a little more substantial. Should give you 3 doubles and a toilet.

The children will grow of course if you feed them.

Ive seen 4/5 berth vans that are only 10ft long excluding the drawbar.

A great design and did consider buying one, but their were compromises like the toilet door access being restricted when the bed was fully extended into a double.

If you only plan on camping in summer months, I too would stick to a trailer tent/folding camper.
we too have 3 children and have had caravan and folding camper. Trouble with very small vans is that when the weather is bad they can be very cramped inside and arguments flare. Rather have a bit of room and loads in a folding camper and have no arguments at bedtime.Stick a porta potti in awning and sorted.
Good Luck with your search.

We have had all sorts of units over a long number of years and, by far, the Folding camper was the roomiest.
We even toured Donegal and Northern Ireland for a Month in it and didn't even take the awning with us.
