We always watch Amazing spaces on TV and are currently looking for a box trailer to convert ourselves. However I just wondered if anyone has actually seen a vintage van or trailer that someone as converted or restored used on a site?
You would probably be better off buying an old caravan and then converting it to your own requirements.
We bought a 4 berth 1997 van and have converted it to a 2 berth slightly luxury unit.
At that age it will have no monitory resale value, so there is no need to worry about us doing anything to it that would devalue it, but we now have a van that is more suitable to our needs and there is no modern van out there that comes even close to what we have now.
I don't have much experience but in the few years I have been caravanning I have not seen any converted vans or vintage caravans amazing spaces etc on any of the camp sites I have stayed at. Indeed some sites state they do not accept "conversions" without prior approval. Even those George Clarke rave on about seem a bit low rent and impractical if you ask me. Makes good TV but who with a family is going to stay in one for a week. I recall a couple paid others to convert a vintage ambulance, they paid over 10k to get the work done and the end result was claustrophobic and would not be possible to sleep in.
Perhaps those that own 5 or 6k caravans would not stay on the smaller sites that we prefer, but we see enough "vintage and converted" vans to make the idea of converting something to your own liking, a good idea.
When I see the amount of trouble that many have when they invest thousands of pounds in brand new heaps of junk, I am surprised that there are not more people saving their money and converting sound, older vans to suit their own needs.
