We want to get a differant car for towing out 2 berth Lunar Stellar, At the moment we use a 2007 Kia Sportage but its petrol so as you can imagine does the job but sluggish. What we looking for is diesel, automatic and preferably with tax under £200 what ideas people recommend?? I cant afford new by the way so will be second hand.

What is the MTPLM of the Lunar? What sort of car do you need the rest of the time? How big is the budget?

If the caravan is as light as I think it is then a Focus, Astra, Golf sized car would do the job.

I think your weights are confuddled. I expect your caravan has a max weight of around 1200kg depending on the year and exact spec.

We have just got rid of a Focus 1.6 diesel estate, manual, 115bhp, which towed our Ranger, MTPLM 1184kg, without any trouble. Yes it was a bit slow on some steep hills but that wasn't a worry and it was very stable even at 70mph in France. To get an auto version you need the 2.0 diesel which has 140 bhp and would be great. We used to have a Galaxy with the 2.0 diesel auto and it didn't notice the caravan was there at all.

Have a quick look to see what you can find within your budget and then do a quick check on Parkers website to see the towing limits. The diesel auto versions of the cars I suggested will do the job but I'm not sure of the annual tax costs or what you would find in your price range. The obvious choice for a tow car is often a Mondeo if you need a larger car.

Mondeo 2litre tiptronic is a very good bullet proof auto.

Simple, Skoda Octavia Estate 2.0Tdi 4x4, pulls my 2 berth Compass Omega 482 myplm 1,318kg with ease. Plenty of load space, extra traction on those muddy fields, does the job well. Good solo and for work use as well, 33-37mpg towing. Road tax £145.00 year and very low emissions!!!!
