We are hopefully picking up our new van from Venture in Feb' the question is,how /when do we insure it?as we have no details of it yet,we cant give the insurance company any info etc,as it will need to be insured to bring it home,we're a little concerned about the procedure needed.
Although we have now delivered the old van to venture,I was advised to retain the insurance on it (renewed September)as I don't think I can freeze it and transfer it to the new one,has anyone gone through this experience that can offer advice that will give us a bit of peace of mind, thanks in advance
In Jan ring the dealer and ask for the chris No on van
. If he as ordered your new van from manufacturer he will be able to give you it as it is applied in factory and certain Chris No are allocated to dealer from factory (IE ten vans from Ventura diff models Chris No's all following)
Most Feb sale vans are made from Oct/Nov onwards upto end of December.
You know what model you picked and what exta's if not free and agreed price paid.
For insurance You need
1 Chris number
2 total cost of purchase
3 Day picking up from dealer for insurance to run from
4 year of manufacture ie 2016
I do mine over net and always increase insurance to cover price of new van and any extra's.
If I buy a van costing £18,000 but only pay £16,575 I tell insurance £18,000 only cost a few £'s more but if stolen in first month or written off thats what you will have to pay to replace.
Lot of insurance companies have agents to purchase replacement on your behalf as they buy at trade. I always have new for old cover for 5 years.
I found NFU insurance very reasonable and excellent to deal with if your under 70 but then everything more or less doubled. I now use lifesure group

Hi naturalist123,
That is exactly the kind of info I am looking for, thank you for taking the time to explain,I am already with caravan guard(have been for some time)and happy to stay with them, buying a new Adora, hope it's as good as my previous ones,I see you are like minded in van choice
If your current caravan is insured until next Sept then presumably you would contact insurer by phone a few days before collecting new 'van & advise of change of 'van with details & collection date? If they needed to adjust premium, then they would advise you of amount & they could email you paperwork so you had it when collecting new 'van.
That's how you do it when changing cars so I would guess it's same with caravan.
As above - ring the company a few days before delivery and give them the details and price quoted in brochure plus full price any extras fitted. (don't know what you personally do about the contents...), they will quote you any additional premium to cover up to next renewal.
Seems odd to me that Venture already have your van but want you to insure it.
Caravan Guard are very good when changing vans. We changed our van in September. Our policy was due to end 27th September but we were getting our new van on the 16th. A couple of weeks before I contacted them about the change. From memory I think they charged us £15.00 for the change from the 16th to the 27th then the new policy kicked in.
Thanks for the input folks, most appreciated, apparently,as no money has changed hands between us,I technically still own my old van until the deal is sealed,as it's my first time buying/selling with a dealer, although not naive, I have put my faith in them,so therefore welcome any advice from people with more experience of buying/selling this way
Very unwise to tow an uninsured new caravan. As pointed out, 3rd party cover on car ins so road legal, but no cover for accident damage to caravan.
It appears op 'van is still owned by op although stored at dealers so still covered by op insurance. Perhaps a good plan to inform insurer that 'van is currently stored at dealer premises?
latest update,I contacted Venture who said that until the van is sold, technically I still own it,but as they have their own insurance,I could cancel mine if I so wished.I contacted Caravan Guard and after speaking to them,I have cancelled my insurance, getting a refund minus £10,and will take out a policy on the new van,the insurance people were very nice and helpful to me,so will stay with them for the time being.
Would like to thank all of you who took the time to advise me on what to do,it is comforting to know there are many helpful people on this forum
