Spending Christmas in the van in Devon, boy was it windy last night; wind was reported as gusting up to 55mph; it got bad around 4am and I was just waiting for the whole thing to go over....but no we survived. Question is tomorrow the windy is forecast as even stronger with gusts over 60mph; so do we carry on as normal and go out for the day as planned; sit in the van in case anything happens, or cut our losses and come home?

You should have gone up country camping tha cape was always renowned for being like the UK four seasons type of place. Thats why Jan Van Riebeck went back to Holland and the Portuguese went up country hence the name Natal as it was christmas and Christmas in Portuguese is called Natal

We were due to go away but cancelled due to the forecast winds. To be fair it was only in the last few days the speed of the winds picked up on the forecasts. If you were already away you wouldn't have known.
I would stay put and sit it out, far more dangerous and risky to try to tow in gusty winds with those speeds, l have been in similar situations early season in the Conwy valley, once with 60mph gusts that were battering our lightweight Lunar to a point that we felt it would blow over if we left it unballasted by our human weight, so we stayed in for the day, and left a few days later when the wind had dropped and was calmer.

No straps, we've got the van front facing the wind. So far the wind hasn't been too bad in general, it's just the gusts. We have been sited at the bottom of the hill, but above the water level. The site owners have been very helpful.

If you're nose to wind you should be fine. You tow at 60mph and that is a 60mph wind on the van on a no wind day; more in a head wind.
You also don't worry if it's in storage in that wind.
