Just looking through the car/caravan matching sites and trying to match my car and caravan to make sure it's suitable.. trouble is I can't find our model caravan anywhere in the listing on the websites.... We've got an elddis and on the van it says ex select 450/4 and it's 1998 model.is there another model that this van goes by when using the matching service?????

The ex select was a special based on the Elddis Wisp ..... So try the Wisp 450/4.

The gross loaded weight, ie mtplm should be on plate at at front of caravan. Once you know that then know what cars will tow it. Matching sites serve no purpose because you need to check weights on both car & caravan from actual vehicles or manufacturer literature such as handbooks or brochures.

Sorry again guys for the questions how confident would you be with these results regarding towbar and caravan match.

Car: 2009 volvo v50 2 litre diesel r design 134 hp

Caravan: 1998 Elddis ex select 450/4

MIRO 867kg

Maximum allowable 1100kg.

Results

VIN/MTPLM 73.3%

KERB/MTPLM 75.5%

MAX TOW/MTPLM 73.3%

ACHIEVABLE NOSEWEIGHT 6.8%!!!! It's saying the most stable towing combinations require 7% or above.

The reason for me asking these questions and I hope you don't mind, is because I'm new to caravan towing, and with having the family in the car, I want to make sure everything is right.

The nose weight maybe my main concern as my maximum allowance is 75% . I know I could measure it with a gauge, ut would you guys feel confident with these results as I want to make sure I am way in with the 85% rule.

MTPLM of caravan should ideally be 85% or less of cars kerb weight. Could be more.

Nose weight should be between 4$ and 7% of MTPLM of caravan and should not exceed the max nose weight for your car.

MTPLM of caravan should be less than Max Tow braked trailer weight of car.

Fully loaded caravan and fully loaded weight of car should not exceed the Gross Train weight of the car.

Try and find this info from you car and caravans plate or log book or hand book as info on web sites can be hopelessly wrong.

MTPLM of caravan,
Kerb weight of the car
Max Tow braked trailer weight of car.
Gross Train weight of the car.
Max nose weight for car.

If the caravan's MTPLM is 1100 kgs. (as stated) then your Volvo V50 2.0 ltr diesel is ideal with a kerbweight of 1456 kgs. for towing this caravan as the match would be just under 76%. Having a manual 6 speed gearbox, 136 BHP and 236 Lbs/ft. of engine torque is more than adequate so as long as you adhere to the 75 kgs. towball noseweight there shouldn't be any concerns.

Absolutely no problems with your match take care when loading make sure heavy items are placed over the axle and low down, and any items in cupboards etc are well packed I used to pack out with light items such as t shirts and toilet rolls , much better than suffering damaged items in transit. You were quite right though to be cautious and be safe theres too many that take to this past time buy a caravan way too big for their car then take to the road incorrectly loaded then blames everyone else when it goes wrong.
Hope you enjoy it anyway
