Was watching Rip of Britain and this guy had fully comprehensive insurance on his car.When he checked the small print on his insurance for going abroad he was only covered for third party.On the program he said,"I thought whether i was in Britain or abroad you would think having fully comprehensive would cover me"Wrong..you have to let your insurance know if your driving out of the country as a small charge may apply so be aware.
This is quite normal and has been the case for a long time. We have to pay a small amount extra if we take my wife's car. In fairness to our insurers Morethan they make it very clear its U.K. Cover only.

My LV policy extends the true comprehensive to a whole list of continental countries; one reason I insured with them as I knew some more budget companies ask for a supplement to extend to more than the EU legal level of cover.
Yes one needs to be careful. By law all car insurance has to have min 3rd party cover for continent so beware of call centre staff stating you are covered for continent.
Usually comprehensive continental cover is extra cost & most will cover max 60 or 90days abroad. Some require notification of when you go abroad so always read small print carefully. The first price quoted will invariably be basic comprehensive cover so you will have to request the extra cost comp abroad cover to be added.
Saga, for over 50s gives comprehensive cover abroad all year as standard so I stick with them, each year at renewal time I shop around, find a cheaper quote & Saga will always match it.
If people always go for the cheapest cover thats exactly what they get!!! The better the policy the more you get. If, at renewal time, you knew that you would be going abroad they its up to the person taking the insurance to check that everything he needs is covered. Nothing to do with Rip off Britain but more to do with common sense!!!
