I have found one problem already. The yacht broker led me to believe that it would cost around £1700 pa for a berth at the marina, but if the boat is over 7m then the rate goes up to £420 per metre. I don't fancy launching from a trailer after watching lots of youtube videos. Berths in the estuary are a lot cheaper at £76 per metre but I bet there is a long waiting list for those.
Perhaps the caravan may be staying after all.
estuary berths are probably cheaper Brian but as you say you're probably talking a dead mans shoes situation, plus insurance will charge you more for being on a tidal stream mooring. you may get more outings on an estuary mind you. As you're probably on the same stretch of water we are, there are very few times even in mid summer where you can go out or plan a trip of a couple of days without getting caught in a nasty lumpy sea. We got fed up getting thrown about on the irish sea or sitting in the marina looking out at the waves crashing through the breakwater. You certainly get more chance in these climes to use a caravan than a boat. We even thought about moving our boat to France for holidays but the marina situation in most of France is 5-10 year waiting list!

I wouldn't want to put you off, as we had some great times with our boat, it's just that boating on a river is a bit more restrictive than on the sea. There are only two ways to go, and once you've done both a few times....... Also, on tidal waters there's no river licence to find, although you are more restricted by tidal considerations and bad weather. Have fun, we did!
I'll second that.
Exactly as Colin21 says - if you are on a river you can only go up or down . . . or down and up . . .
Years ago we had a little cabin cruiser on a nearby canal. The 'novelty' of the same stretch of water, same locks, same pubs, same moorings wore off very quickly.
So after lots of deliberation the decision has been made and it is being sold! Got it serviced last week and please to have a report to confirm it is 100% damp free.
