Just bought a caravan in Germany ... collecting next month.
They asked me if I wanted to register it in Germany with German plates.
As I will be towing it with a UK reg car, I intend putting UK plates on it with a GB sticker.
We will store it in France, as we have done with our previous FC.
Does anyone see any reason to undergo any registration? ... we have the 17 digit Chasis Number.
Theres no need to register it, if you collect it with UK reg car then UK rules, ie no compulsory registration for caravans & UK car numberplate on rear apply throughout EU.
I would guess the advantage of German reg is that you then get Tuv & can tow at 100k on autobahn otherwise it's 80k but if you are leaving Germany by shortest route never to return, then little point.
I bought my van in France and they offered to register it,I declined but in retrospect I wish I had as 2nd hand van prices in France are a lot more than UK prices for 2nd hand and if you try to sell in the UK a lot of buyers are reluctant to buy an imported van.

Is there any reason I couldn't sell it in France in a few years time? I'll have all the original paper work, and of course the chasis number is on the van.
To sell it in France it will need to be registered and have it's unique registration,my thoughts are it is just as well to get it done first as last.

If you sold it in France it could be registered in France, it would cost a few £100s I think, as you need cert of conformity from maker which you should get with new caravan paperwork & then a gas test & so on.
If your French ain't good it might be difficult to convince buyer it was legit same as here when Cris details ain't quite right & buyer would rather find something that was deffo ok.
Probably be easier to take it back to Ireland if you wanted to sell it.

Though, as the van is french built (Sterckeman), it should be easier to sell in France? I will have all the original paperwork plus the German registration for the eight months it was there.
