Hi all I'm new to caravans we camped in a tent till last year when we decided to buy a caravan I've been looking for nearly a year now and dont really know anything about caravans so decided to buy from a dealer where we would have some come back , has anyone got a bailey pageant betagne s5 and is there issues with damp in them don't want to buy a dud and we're going to see it tomorrow ?
the main problem with caravans of that age is stress cracking of the ABS plastic front & rear panels. This was not solely a Baily problem but they did suffer badly
Check for FINE cracks emanating from under the awning rails (especially around the curved bit at the top)or from under the seam rail across the top of front & rear panels.
Any sign of a crack ,which can be as fine as a hair & 2/3 mm in length ,or any sign of repairs ,walk away as these can be the source of very bad damp problems & are very difficult to repair .cost to replace these panels is around £1000/1500 each & was the normal option taken by Bailey under their warranty
The cause of these cracks was down to manufacture as the panels were not supplied with ready drilled fixing holes & many during assembly the screws were simply driven through the plastic resulting in stress cracking to appear some times years later
finally when you are certain of the van you want get a pre sales check done by an independent mechanic even if buying from a dealer
Hi Old Chap thank you very much for replying we went to look and he had a load of baileys in and I looked where you said one had filler in a patch along the awning rail the other had a crack and inside we could see the corner under the cracks screws and wood had moisture damage and another had a obvious patch of damp we looked at 3 all had issues needless to say we won't be visiting get that dealer again so big thanks to you we didn't buy a damaged van :)
