Hi everyone,

I have been a motorhome camper for the last 2 years but I want to get a caravan instead. So have booked my training for the B+E licence.

I currently drive a 2010 (60 Facelift) Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi Auto (140bhp). I was wondering if this is an ok car to tow. the caravan I have access too has a MTPLM of 1440kg.

Please advise, thank you :)

Good luck Chris ! I Had to do it last year, failed it on first go within 2 minutes as made a mess of the reverse! I had done it a 100 times no issue before! Went back the week later and passed no problem!

By the looks of your weights you might not need to do it? You only need to do it if mam is more than 3500kgs, if your van is only 1440kg its unlikely your car is 2000kg? Unless I misunderstand your weights.

Might be worth doing anyway, amazes me people are allowed to tow vans without training, i have had a few older people on sites tell me how I was hitching incorrectly, they base there knowledge on the fact they have been towing for 30 years, not realising they have been doing wrong.

Hi Jam2015,

Thank you, I suppose its nerves when you actually do your test. (im rather worried about it).

Based on my car being fully laden, my car is 2240kg (on V5) which obviously means I can tow 1260kg so thought I would do it anyway (thinking of doing my C+E instead as I have class C entitlement).

I was just wondering if my car has the capability to tow the van.

I have got the usage of a Freelander 2 which means I would need the licence too.

Sorry didn't realise the weight of the mondeo. Yes your right, nerves got the best of me, surprised me as failure was hardly devastating!

Have you tried www.towcar.info it will tell you if your match works. Main thing is it legal, if so then it depends how important you think the 85% "rule" is.

Thanks for letting me know fleck2, I just didn't know if the 140BHP version was slightly underpowered.

Thanks Softguy :)

According to the techincal data, that Mondeo can tow up to 2000kg so you are well within the train weight of the car and within the guideline of 85%.
