Have not taken one abroad myself , but I have seen a few on French sites ,but as they have to be reversed onto a pitch that are usually tight to get on to, the ones I have seen have been sited where ever there is sufficient room for them to manoeuvre & not actually on a pitch.
so it would be prudent to prebook & not just turn up
been taking mine for the last 15 yrs . usually in winter . some sites are very tight but usually if you want to use them you can . mind i dont use hardly any. see lots on sites though . its away round the c1+e licencing for many . plus fifth wheelers or mini artics are overall shorter than a car and caravan same length caravan.
b+e you can tow any weight trailer as long as you dont break the tow weight of the towing vehicle . so lower a 6.3 ton to 3,500kg gvw it keeps the train of 9.8 ton. using a fifth wheel its ok.
if you had a big m,home it would be over 3,500kg .
also conventional caravans you are restricted by the tow bar capacity of the tow vehicle .
I have seen several being towed by double cab Izsu pickup,s
I believe you can buy the van and supply your own tow vehicle to be converted to fifth wheel or buy the complete item.
I have seen fith wheelers for sale but does not include tow vehicle this is extra but one is no good without the other as tow vehicle is fitted with the fifth wheel which I would imagen be expensive to convert Were as any car fitted with tow bar can tow a caravan so long as the van is not heavier than the car.
PS I have seen 15 tonner flat bed wit bed removed and a caravan fitted on back so van mud guards fitted over rear wheels and A frame was removed and front of van just short of lorry cab..
.?? Would it be legal to travel in van as it was not being towed but more like a MHome.
i use a mitsubishi canter and pull a lynton mini artic . have had the trailer 16 yrs now . i converted the truck it was our local grave diggers tipper.
at the moment its 6.3 ton gvw but when i reach 70 i shall voluntary lower it to 3,500kg gvw and move the trailer wheels forward to lighten the pin load .
the best bit is you can tow heavy trailers as the towbar restriction isnt any where like the train weight allows .
flat fronted trucks are best . shorter and more manouverable . and you can have a 7 seater double cab.
