I have a philosophy when it comes to things like caravans. Buy new or nearly new if you can afford it, or buy for an amount you can afford to lose if it all goes wrong. I have often thought about upgrading to something costing between £2k and £3k, which I could probably just about afford, but I'm not convinced I would get anything better than our £500 van. I could even get something worse, although not immediately apparent. I certainly couldn't afford to lose £2,000 and definitely not £3,000, so I think I'll stick with what we've got. After all, the only thing "wrong", with it, if you can call it that, is that it is an older styling. If something does go seriously wrong with it I'll just sell it on for spares or scrap it, and then look for another £500 "special". We are now on our third year with the Elddis, so I consider that we have already had more than our money's-worth!

Colin

We got a lovely van for £1200 (included some extras). We looked at a few. I think you can definitely get a nice starter van for under a grand. You just need to look about on EBay.

You certainly can get a nice cheap van on ebay, as we did. However, never buy one, or even bid on one, without having a really good look at it first, and if you are not sure what problems you are looking for, take someone with you who does. We looked at several before we bought. Don't expect perfect, but know what is easily repairable, what is just cosmetic, and what is going to cause big problems.
