We had Gale force winds in Norfolk in 2014, in fact it was windy all week and that's a pain, trying to eat outside or just sit out when everything not fastened down instantly goes hurtling off down the campsite.
2015 in Northumberland it rained. And rained. In fact it rained for 3 days non-stop out of the 7. I have to say our teenagers were great about it and we did find things to do but it was disappointing.
We are sticking to weekends and short breaks this year. France is too far for us from the North of England. It won't stop me camping but just a bit if warm sunshine would be nice!

Away then weather is everything particularly if one has only a small living space like a caravan. So it depends how you view it. If one cannot enjoy bad weather & finds all one is doing is sitting in caravan waiting for the rain to stop then perhaps it is time for a rethink.
The purpose of a break or holiday away from home is to have a better time than if one is at home so one needs a plan to ensure that is achieved.
When I take my 5 children away camping, the weather makes no differance to the kids, even if it is raining, we put on our wetsuits and go to the beach, the kids love it, play in the water mess around in the wet sand, better then sitting down looking at the rain, we can do that at home, so might as well make the most of it, the younger kids love it the most, all good childhood memories to look back on when they are older, if there is a playground on the campsite, the kids put on rain coat, rain pants and wellies and off they go having fun, jumping in puddles, chasing each other around the play ground x
I don't mind a bit of rain, but we had 3 days of solid rain once and with a toddler and a 9 year old it became very fraught! It didn't help that we were pitched under a tree and the noise of the rain dripping off the tree onto the caravan roof kept me awake every night! we ended up going out in it for walks, kids splashed in puddles and we got showers when we got back! Wasn't my idea of a great time but we made the best of it!
Richard0805,
Not sure I can totally agree with your statement,
Some extreme weather conditions would be unsuitable even for the most protective of clothing.
My original post should have included wind as well as rain, the combination of the two probably is the killer when vanning, especially if you have an awning erected.
