We just use an ordinary TV. The Avtec ones as you say are very expensive.
Our TV works from a 12V external power supply, so when we go away we just plug it into the 12V supply in the van and don't bother with the power supply.
Think ours is 19", but many times it doesn't even get unpacked as it's only used on rainy days.
I bought a cheap one from Tesco with a two year guarantee, works great. Then if it gets damaged in transit I will get another. More than half the price of a caravan one.
We use an Avtex as it came with the van,in fact we have one from last van too!
We have a satellite kit which I was going to use in Luxembourg but found the tv only has hdmi connector!
The older tv is ok so we will need to swap it over to use satellite.
We also have dvds with us but so far have not bothered. Not missed it in 3 weeks!
------------- DS-There's more to life than football!!!
We have an Avtex Combi TV with a built in satellite receiver. It works well with our automatic roof mount dish as there is no gubbins inside the van. Having said that if you are always going to be on 230v electrics and just use an aerial I would have though any good branded TV would be fine. In previous caravans we had both Samsung and Hitachi, the latter having a particularly good picture. One thing I would say is to try and see them working before you buy as sometimes the angle of view is critical.
We use a Cello TV in the van. Works off 12v or mains has built in DVD /CD drive and a DVB-T tuner and less than half the price of equivalent Avtex cost us £129 brand new this year. Happy with it as draws less current on 12v than a lot of cheaper models
Buy a decent mains TV. The cheaper ones suffer badly from reflections and you also have sit directly in front. We have a 19" Samsung which is excellent. I don't use electric hook up but use a mains invertor. Altogether it only draws about 22W.
Over the years we have had many TV sets and always had good reception.
the first change was from 405 line to 605 line then digital.
Buy your self a high gain aerial off E bay one that you can assemble in5/10 mins about £36/40 with pole.
connect length of cable from aerial to van connection if you have one or put through window and shut same rubber seal will cope with cable ,plug into tv or digi box then box to tv. if you have spare tv at home about 32" or less around that size most run on mains but reduce to 15volt or 12 volt through plug or set itself.
Our present set is a German set bought in B&M for £69 plays 2 sizes of vids has over 150 channels 120 obtainable off aerial in UK can be used as pc screen and films via fire stick from amazon.
When I set up I just copy position of other van aerials and tighten pole clamp on A frame if OH is not happy I just move slightly clock or anti clock till OH is happy then reclamp. my total outlay £120 Ps buy a blue screen TV very good for reflection stay away from Curries own.
