Hi, looking for a good deal with a decent company on car breakdown insurance. New to this, so basically want cover that would rescue both our car and the caravan & bring both home if we break down. It seems a minefield out there of many companies! Any thoughts/experience please?

It is a mine fields as far as I am aware might be wrong but most if not all breakdown is only for the car unless you pay extra for the caravan .

What I mean is if you have breakdown cover on the car if the car breaks down both the car and the caravan will be recovered. If the caravan breaks down they will probably charge you to be recovered.

If you have breakdown cover on both car and caravan you are covered and they will recover you in any circumstances.

We are covered in our insurance with the RAC but as our van is currently stored on the site we use we haven't bothered with the van.

I have seen some caravan insurances having breakdown cover included

We're with Green Flag Mayday through the caravan club.

They cover the car and caravan, and I think they DON'T have a length limit on the size of van either.

Some, from what others have said here, have a limit of 7 metres, yet our van is 7.4 and we had to use our breakdown cover for the first time in anger last week when were away, and the recovery guys had no issues with the size of our outfit.

We were with GEM Motering Assist for a few years. They will recover you with a caravan up to 7 mtr in length, 2.5 mtr wide and 35000kg GVW.

We now have Mayday Recovery, mostly because we are members of the Caravan Club & because they do the recovery to holiday destination, then recovery home if your vehicle still cannot be fixed. There are no size or weight restrictions either.

We are with the RAC through the Camping and Caravan Club, covered for breakdown with the car or caravan. We are covered for our van for onward travel to complete our journey should we suffer an unfortunate mis-hap. Considered changing to Green Flag this year due to price difference, the RAC matched the price, can't fault the service. check out the main breakdown services and ensure they will cover all your needs should you require assistance.

I see the AA will recover a caravan with a car but does anyone know if they will if the caravan breaks down?

I was with the AA for years. When we got our caravan 4 years ago I checked the policy and rang them. There was no guarantee given to me that convinced me that they would recover car and caravan if it was the caravan that had broken down and not the car. I moved to the RAC arrival via camping and caravan club. Used once.   Was ok. Very long wait for recovery truck after initial assessment after 1 hour (clutch slipping). They took caravan to storage yard and car home.   It was lucky car could still pull van as the two truck couldn't get van to right place in yard as it was too big.

There are several breakdown companies that will cover both car and caravan but ONLY if the caravan is hitched to the towing vehicle at the time of breakdown. If the towing vehicle and caravan are detached when the vehicle breaks down ie. when the unit is pitched on a campsite then they will only recover the vehicle if it cannot be repaired at the roadside. This means that the caravan is not their responsibility so arrangements have to made independently for recovery if needed. However, the only two breakdown companies that offer such cover if the towing vehicle and caravan need recovery simultaneously are RAC 'Arrival providing that the towing vehicle is within 75 miles from the caravan at the time of breakdown and Green Flag 'Mayday' to which there is no restriction regarding the length of caravan or motorhome.

Same here. Mayday is small print hassle free. Worth mentioning that if you have Mayday with CC, then you qualify for a discount on their Red Pennant cover if you take the outfit abroad
