my electric dont seem to be working properly. it is just the volt meter not showing the true charge and the water pump has to be turned off as it stays on after water use. all the other functions appear to be working. checked all fuses and all ok, just wondering if i have missed something. my caravan is a lunnar quazar . any ideas to go for
If the water was running satisfactorily previously then check the battery with a proper voltmeter as the battery gauge you are referring to is just a guide to show any drop in voltage. If the voltage is low then this will cause the water pump to run continuously.
But why would the water pump light come on while I am on electric. The vault Meyer used to swing over to the right in the Meter, but now it is just on 12v mark while on electric. It is looking like to me that part of the electrical circuit board has gone down
The pump light will come on when the pump is activated which is functioned by 12 volt power (not mains power). If the battery gauge is showing only 12 volts then this is a sign that the battery is low and doesn't have enough current to stabilise the power to the pump which will activate and finally drain the battery completely. That's why you need to conduct a test with a voltmeter across the battery terminals to identify how much voltage remains.
The onboard charger is fed by the mains electric hook up which in turn reduces the voltage from 230 volts to 14 volts which is also called a 'transformer' due to this reason. The 14 volt current is transferred to the battery which keeps the battery charged.
If you need to know if the charger/transformer is defective then you have to turn off all electrics first, remove the battery and keep the battery terminals separated (so they don't make contact). Turn on the mains power (and the charger switch) then take a reading of the two battery connectors with the voltmeter which should read around 14 volts so anything less is evidence that the charger is not performing effectively. If you conduct a test with the battery connected you will only get a reading of 12.8 to 13 volts which is not a true reading to test if the charger has malfunctioned or not.
Hope this explains more in detail how the electrical system works.
