On returning from holiday i have discovered a hole in our Bailey orion roof. Don't know how this has happened i can only assume something has dropped on the roof.
There is now a hole which has pierced the skin about the size of a 2p coin which i have put some tape over to protect from rain until i can contact my insurance company
does anybody know if these alutec roofs can be repaired or would it require a new roof?
Its a 2011 model any advice would be gratly appreciated
I believe that the sides of our Orion have a GRP skin but really don't know about the roof.
Spoke to someone today who has had several caravans and he said the roof and front is one piece and if it had to be replaced insurance might write it off.
Really hope not but will have to contact a specialist to see
IMHO I believe there are plenty of products on the market which will give a satisfactory repair to a caravan roof with a 25mm hole in it..
It is the roof after all so a patch stuck on with an adhesive would be quite adequate I would have thought, a write off is going a bit too far me thinks.
It's unlikely it would be viable to replace the roof. Even a new caravan will be written off first. Good example is hail damage. Perfectly serviceable caravan is written off, owner is paid out. Insurance co sells salvage & caravan just goes back on road as is. Nothing wrong with it except cosmetic damage.
If they write it off for a small hole in the roof then buy the salvage off them. Patch the hole with Isopon P40 which will be a permanent repair & pocket the difference. I think it's unlikely it will be written off though. Hole will be filled as described & painted over. With modern paint repair techniques I doubt you will see the join.

I fully agree with Opensauce if insurer does write off yourr caravan.
Thanks everyone for your advice. I checked my policy and i do have new for old cover so i cant see them writing it off if the roof can be repaired. Going to call a alutec specialist tomorrow to seek advice and costs.

Hi Navver

The roof is NOT one piece, there is a join two third of the way back covered by a thin strip of plastic.
I have just placed an image of the damage in my gallery images if anyone wants to take a look. No idea what has dropped on it or what the circles are around it.
I have put some gaffer tape on for the time being to protect from rain, and until our insurance company re-opens tomorrow.
That looks like a small stone or something fired from a catapult on a motorway bridge.
Yes there is a join in the roof. It is front panel plus front half of roof joined to rear half of roof and rear panel. Just two pieces for front roof and rear.
The roof is GRP as well. Easy to repair and the outside finish is gelcoat. Hardest bit being matching the colour but it's probably available from Bailey.
We did have 60mph gusts of wind why we were away so i can only assume that something has fallen on it. Not a great way to finish a good 2 weeks away.
spoke to a bailey dealer today abd showed them the damage and they think the insurance might write it off as they have said the roofs are costly to repair.
Will have to see what our insurance says when i can get hold of them.
