I'm toying with the notion of joining either the Caravan or the Camping and Caravanning Club.

My main reason would be to have access to all-year-round sites, which are otherwise scarce. But I only want to join one, so any views or advice would be welcome.

At the mo' I'm leaning toward the CCC, both as an ex-tenter and because of the significantly cheaper joining fee, but please tell me if you think I'm missing something.

There are more CLs than CSs. We are members of both clubs and use these small sites in preference to the club sites. However, as CSs can accept tents, they more often tend to have loos and showers, which CLs quite often do not, so really it's a matter of personal choice and whether you are prepared to use your own facilities. Are you sure you can't run to both, even if only for a year?

Hi Hairwol
We are in the CCC
Great sites and most ever paid for a CS was £15 a night. That included hard standing, toilets, washing, drying, etc.

We use a site in Derbys reg and its £8 a night elc, shower, toilet. no hard standing.
Another site nearby same as this but CL is £12 a night.

Its horses for causers am afraid. You can pay for a CS at 25 per night, & a CL but i would never do that.

As for the CC i would say that prices would be around the same, because no matter what, they talk to each other and set the rates for there sites.

For main holidays i use Haven, so grandkids have everything on site to do. In saying that i met a couple this year that got a full month for less than £200 all in? (motorhome/ caravan ) Be it in June, and same deal now for Sept. Thats a Euro Pitch.
Again with the above other places and parks do deals as well.

Hope this helps.

Cheers
Ray

CS sites can take up to 10 tents, and our experience was that it was sometimes more than this. So the little 5 pitch site, suddenly become 15+. Which whilst not a lot, is a lot if you are only expecting 4 other units to be on site.

We have found with both clubs that it is very rare to be asked to show your membership, so is it really worth joining either if you don't want to use the club sites?

We are members of the C&CC, and the last CS we used was one in the Rutland area. It was a lovely spot and had all we needed.

We are members of both clubs but use CLs mostly because there are more of them. We often get asked for our membership number

Being with both clubs and using both CS and CL there can be no answer to which clubs 5 van sites are the best. Each club has gems and others, well shall we say not anywhere near as "nice".

The CC has by far the greater number of 5 van sites, though sadly the number of these is dropping like a stone, so in that regard it is the "better" club in giving greater access.

Outside these main clubs there are effectively no commercial 5 van sites as that number is not financially viable, though there are commercial site offering camping for larger numbers of units.
