Hi I'm new to the site and new to owning a caravan. I'm not using it to holiday on just to keep at my stables. We have hooked it up to our genny and all the plug sockets work but nothing else. It has a leisure battery but this will be well dead as its a really old caravan and just been used to keep cats in (yes it stunk really bad). I've read a few posts on here and I think from my understanding none of the lights or pump or anything else will work until we have a fully charged working battery. Am I right?

Depending what caravan it is, some of the lights will be mains and some will be 12 volt off the battery. You will need to check them individually. You are right about the pump. They are invariably 12 volts off the battery, but may work off a transformer in the van that is used to charge the battery when in situ.

Caravans vary quite a bit, so without the make, model, and approximate age,it is difficult to be more specific I'm afraid. If you are going to hook it up to a genny, just get hold of an old car battery that can hold a bit of a charge, as this will help to stabilise the 12 volt supply from the caravan's charger if it has one. Then you should be able to use your 12 volt lights and water pump.

-------------
Best Regards,
Colin
