Hi all,
As a long term camper we're getting a bit fed up trying to dry a 7mx4m tent in a terraced house when we get back so, I've just bought the above caravan!
There's a few dents in the rear bumper but otherwise it appears in reasonable nick, obviously it's not going to be perfect for the money. It has had new wheels and tyres last year and a new carpet is included to replace the mucky one (a job for tomorrow!).
Apparently there is an issue with the water pump - it doesn't work! So I'll need to source a replacement for that (any ideas?).
Other than that, when I pick it up tomorrow I'm going to give it a good clean and look over and try and get her tidied up.
Has anyone else bought such an old van? If so, I'd appreciate any tips to get started. Having never towed one before (only a small camping trailer) I'm hoping that I'll be ok!
Check the powerpoint where the pump plugs in to see if there is power. Is the pump switch on? Blown fuse?
Some pump connectors are poor, i keep thinking of changing mine but i just get a small brass brush and open the pins slightly to make better contact.
Some contact/switch cleaner helps.
Many years ago i bought an old sprite musketeer, the one with glass windows. It was in such a fabulous condition for its age, but nobody wanted it because of the glass windows. I looked at lots of newer vans which were full of damp.
I really wanted an old Austin Maxi to tow it but never got around to that.
Its newer than my van, but i have had mine for over 16 years now.
Thanks, I'm itching to get it here so I can go over everything. I'll definitely check for power. Presumably everything is accessible through one of the many openings around the van?
Shame about the Musketeer, I personally can't see a problem with glass windows? After all, our cars all have them :)
Hah, oh right, yeah, it's just the edge of some protection film. I'll be getting the hairdryer out to remove it (and all the faded decals) at some point.
I have to admit, you had me panicking there for a moment!
As for the electric check/water pump etc - what would people recommend? Can any electrician sort it or am I best looking for a caravan specialist? Preferably mobile.
If anyone has a recommendation in the North East/Middlesbrough area then that would be great.
Have you checked the fuse? Don't ask me where they are as I haven't got a clue. But there will be one. Is the battery OK? do you have 12V power elsewhere? Check with a voltmeter at the connection for the pump. If you have power there it may be the pump itself is goosed.

Looks almost identical to mine, except that mine is a 1988 model. The cost was identical too.
If your water pump is one of the submersible types like mine, they are not very expensive if yours has failed. They are great old vans, and have had some great holidays with mine over the past 3 years. Ok, so mine's not perfect either, but what the hell!
