I think I would abandon your original wheel arch cover as it seems not fit for purpose and buy one with the necessary beading strip on the top, it will probably come with the other necessary item, the figure of eight strip as well. It's not going to be that expensive and perhaps a retailer has a second hand one knocking about. Keep the suckers for the new one.
