How about not retracting it and sticking a cover on. Would it be that bad? I would be scared to death of it not coming out come the day of a trip, or worse, come the day of leaving. Having one stuck out (oo-err mrs) certainly gives other motorists something to consider when pulling too close in car parks!

Some years late reply I know but I had same issue with a tiguan I had back in 2019 tow ball would catch water salt everything thrown at it ball rusted ,used different ideas like other people bags ect grease then the cap would still get water in as its up side down , as I used to be in the trade came up with a plan use a universal stretch drive shaft boot cut down u need the cone tool cut down so not to stretch boot too much, stretch it over ball ,the boot stays on ball hitch permanently pop the cap on ,and when tow bar folds away balls protected Alko cap not air tight but does the job
