Unfortunately, my tow ball has become contaminated with grease as I volunteered to collect a trailer for my son. So, cannot tow the caravan until it is completely clean
Can anyone recommend the best solvent to remove it, please?

Anything you have in your shed, turps, meths. Any solvent that dissolves grease.

I always carry an aerosol of brake cleaner which I give the ball a good blast of before every use. They usually are methylene chloride based which evaporates rapidly and doesn`t leave any residue.

I wipe off most of it and then clean off the residue using brake cleaner which I buy from the local pound shop and then wipe dry with kitchen roll.

Thanks for the advice. I had read that white spirit should not be used as it leaves some traces of oil. I tried meths (on the tow ball!!) and, although the surface looked ok, there was still some obvious ingrained staining.
In the end, I used a cleaner called 'Barkeepers Friend' that I use for all sorts of other cleaning, including car glass. This removed the black traces and left the ball shining. I then finished off with some trust Brake Cleaner and all is ready for the off!

We give our towball a wipe with brake fluid each time we tow.

Sometimes a little rain must fall before you reach a rainbow.
The work will wait while you show the child the rainbow, but the rainbow won't wait while you finish the work.

AAARRGGGHHH! Surely not! It would soon destroy your friction pads if you have a stabilising hitch. If you don`t have a stabilising hitch then oil or grease would be better as it won`t strip the paint and isn`t corrosive.
