As a newbie does any one know what sort of things i can hook up to regarding the external 3pin housing on the caravan or some things not to do, ie would it be okay to say charge the car battery ? or other uses.
We use ours for running a small oven sometimes in the awning and the bread maker as well as connecting a battery charger as our van does not have an on board charger, of course not all at the same time.

Heater for awning, chip pan, lights, yes you could charge the car battery, might limit what you can use in the van at the same time.

You can plug in most items with a 3 pin plug such as a mains powered awning light, a phone charger, electric frying pan for use in the awning, an electric heater etc. but what you have to be aware of is the amount of watts that the appliance consumes. Any appliance that operates in kilowatts such as a kettle, toaster or a heater etc. then you have to watch that you don't overload the circuit if you have other appliances operating inside the caravan including the hot water emersion if switched on. There are normally three mains electrical sockets in the caravan so the external one makes four so the risk of tripping the circuit will be higher so the extra socket has to be used with caution.
What you strictly can't do is use the external socket as an input (such as a generator) as this will cause damage to the mains electrical circuit so all input only has to come via the mains hook up cable and nothing else.
