From where I live I have to use the A303 and the A34 on a regular basis. Both these roads are usually very busy dual carriageways and are used by numerous caravanners travelling south or to the west country. I have to say that I have found most caravanners travel within the speed limits on these roads and I rarely see any potential problems.
However, quite coincidentally as I was joining the A34 this morning and looking in my mirror I saw a large people carrier type vehicle and huge caravan tanking down the road towards me. Strangely, I immediately thought of this thread - lol.
It actually moved out into the outside lane to allow me into the nearside lane which is unusual in itself for a caravan since they are normally travelling at a speed which gives traffic plenty of time to access the road.
As it passed me at a rate of knots I could see it was a beautiful large caravan and looked pretty new and polished. I couldn't catch the make of it but it's tail end was certainly giving a frightening little twitch now and then.
I accelerated to 70 mph and couldn't catch up with it at all but I could still see it's tail end giving regular little twitches from side to side as it bowled down the road. I expect the driver always drives like that, probably doesn't even feel it in his huge car, and has got away with it so far but it will only need one more ingredient such as a side gust of wind or a hump or hollow in the road to send that caravan into an uncontrollable snake and then that beautiful caravan will become matchwood...along with anything else it comes into contact with. In my view it was an accident waiting to happen.
