Hello everyone. Oh God where to start?
I am temporarily without abode as of 4th August
I am looking at a caravan to buy & do up & sell & stay in over the course of one month. I can dedicate my time to it as I have August off work.
Most of the older ones I'm looking at aren't registered.
Sooooo...

I don't even know the questions I should be asking! Never mind the answers!
It's looking a bit of a minefield
It's near on impossible to chat about it with a seller because I have trust issues I always have this little voice inside me that says ... LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE!!!
Any impartial help will be gratefully received.
Thank you
Here are a few of my issues.
CRIS - apparently not a legal requirement? Not linked to the police database? Lots of old ones not registered?
Where does that leave me as a buyer? As a seller?
Before 1991/1992 caravans had no registration at all.
As you have found out, its not a legal requirement to actually register a later caravan its all optional.
Unless you can find a one owner caravan with all the original receipts then you cross your fingers when buying.
Or buy from a dealer where your covered.
Does the seller know where everything is and how it all works? I would expect an owner to know all the ins and outs of the caravan.
If you think ownership is a minefield wait until you start checking out damp issues. Check the fixed it club on here and see how a small damp spot soon turns into a total rebuild.
CRIS isn't a legal requirement, it's just a convenient registration that virtually all new caravans will have. 2nd hand buyers can get a CRIS report and it gives them some comfort.
Having said that, I bought a new van from a major main dealer. The CRIS took about a year to get despite many phone calls and promises. I think they were relocating offices and I'm not sure if they are still as chaotic.
So lack of a CRIS even on a virtually new van may be quite innocent.
If it was sold with CRIS registration there will be a big number engraved on every window.
An older van not registered may have been stolen at some time and probably no-one will know or care. It may have changed hands several times since.
The insurance will have paid out and the van will now have little value anyway.
