Is this the end...how are we caravaners going to pull our caravans? An electric motor home has the UK government lost it? How many people do you know that have got illness due to pollution? What a load of pure utter rubbish
A lot can change in 23 years, both technologically and politically. Look at all that has happened since 1994.
Maybe the politicians will realise that cars only account for about 11% of pollution. The other 89% comes from a wide variety of sources, including all the huge number of other vehicles that are powered by diesel engines. Can you imagine a battery-powered supertanker or container ship? Or are we to go back to sails? Diesel locomotives pull most of our freight trains and many of our passenger trains. Rail electrification schemes are being scrapped wholesale. What about all the cranes, dumper trucks, and other construction vehicles? Politicians say all sorts of things for effect, and many of them never happen for one reason or another. Perhaps they were never intended to happen?
Hybrids are excluded so vehicles such as XC90 will be available. lets just hope they are cheaper options. As previous posters have mentioned a lot can happen in 23 years.
don't know where all these deaths occur over pollution but i am in a diesel workshop daily for 40 years and i am still not dead yet, at least i don't think so
new vehicles only, buy one 2039 and keep it as long as possible, although it wont affect me at all,if I'm still around I'll be 92 and well past my sell by date
I think towing is the last thing you should be worrying about. What about the millions of people that are going to be come unemployed when garages shut, forecourts close, refineries closed, oil rig workers not required etc?
The government will be losing millions in revenue and the only way to recoup this loss is to heavily tax people making it unaffordable for people to buy consumer goods and this causing factories to close down and more unemployment to be created.
These unemployed people will end up rioting as no job, no income to feed and home families and this will make the streets unsafe for all of us.
The Greenies want to destroy our society and planet because of their beliefs!
Just imagine the pollution belched out by burning fossil fuel, and the nuclear waste produced just to generate enough power to keep these ridiculous EVs going.
On the plus side, coal mines re opened, Fracking massively increased, and jobs in the nuclear industry.
I guess we could erect 10s of thousands more of those horrendous, vile looking wind turbines on every available acre of Britains countryside. Get rid of all livestock and cover our pasture fields with solar panels. Or total destroy our aquatic environment and wildlife by building thousands of hydro plants on our beautiful rain fed, spate rivers. That's the way ahead. 👍😀
Far better they spend their time and energy on developing cleaner burning ICE vehicles.
But I still cannot imagine a world with no large road freight, trains, shipping, planes, heavy farm machinery, standby generators for hospitals etc all of which rely on burning fuel of some kind.
Looking at the the long term solution in maybe 30 years or so I cannot see that the government can actually make diesel engines completely obsolete anyway. It would be impossible for an electric farm tractor to plough a huge field without having a series of them in a row ready charged to continue from where the previous tractor left off so the cost to the faming industry would be enormous. The farmers are finding it tough now to survive financially so there's more to be considered than just changing the vehicles on the high street for zero pollution. Narrowboats haven't been mentioned either which is another leisure industry that relies on diesel power and although they can be converted, holiday makers won't want to moor up by the towpath for a whole day just recharging their boat batteries. The emergency services also rely on diesel powered engines especially the RNLI as an electric rescue vessel would be rendered useless in the stormy seas they face off the coastline of Britain.
The 40k deaths is not an actual figure but a statistical construct to try to get some kind of handle on the issue:

This announcement is a reaction to the European Court's threat to fine UK over air pollution, so perhaps once we have escaped that jurisdiction, the proposal may well get watered down.
In all the rush to battery power there is little mention that the Lithium required for these has a finite supply just as oil will have. Further, most of the large deposits are in just a couple of countries in S America, who will no doubt make the most of this position

I bet they use huge diesel guzzling Dozers and trucks to mine the stuff too.
Its just the same as recycling. Crap, like emissions, doesnt stay in one country. What is the point of the UK going all electric, when the likes of the USA, China, and India, are spewing millions of tons of pollutants out. Last time i looked, our sky and air was joined onto their sky and air.
