Hi people I'm probably going to get slated on here as I don't use a map lol. I have been using satnav for a few years and had no problems as I set it to a wagon mode.......BUT this year we went to Scarborough and the satnav tried sending me over some hills that the caravan was prohibited so I turned around and headed back to the main ring road around York sat Nov kept trying to send me back the other way but I ignored it!! My question is this, is their a way I can check what roads caravans can't go down and plan my route 1st using Google maps?

Or any other ideas as to what other people do I would really appreciate it

Have you set it to avoid unpaved roads etc?

What i do is have a quick look at a roadmap and get an idea on which way i should be going and then totally ignore the satnav on the journey.

I was wondering if there was some sort of website that gave you a list of roads that caravans can't go for as this road was a busy A road

I doubt it.
And to be honest I have taken caravans down some roads that others would consider impossible.

I use my Sat Nav, but I confirm the route with google maps. Mine would have sent me down a prohibited road around Scarborough too.

If you have a look on Google maps though its between thirsk and Helmsley on the A170 it doesn't say anything about it being prohibited for caravan's....its a shame really as even as I arrived up to that point there was another caravan reversing back down and must of missed the sign

My prohibited road was near Rosedale Abbey.
You just have to have your wits about you.
And do your homework. 😕

Yes, it's Sutton Bank and if you look on Streetview there is a warning sign about the restriction "3 1/2 miles ahead" (Eastbound).

unless you have a very large van i would not worry about it too much.. my sat nav has never taken me down anything i cant manage..

but my van isnt overly large and its not overly large for a reason.. i tour with it and do go places that would be problematic with a large van..

mostly the sat nav takes a short cut just to save a few hundred yards.. often you can spot when its doing this and go straight on..

the bad bits dont all say caravans prohibited.. in fact most dont.. little short cuts with cars parked on ether side of the road can be awkward.. :)

but it really does come down to how large your van is.. my 2 berth is fine if my tow truck goes through so will whats behind it..

My husband very often ignores the "lady" on the satnav. One of these days she is going to say "Oh please yourself, stop asking me" Or words to that effect
