I have a Citroen Multispace car 2008 110hp have got the chance of buying a caravan but it will take me up to my max towing weight 1300 which I can drive but not to go above a road 1 in 8 hill. Please can any one who has driven up to a weight like this tell me about it & 1 in 8 what kind of hill is it? Any advice you can give thank u. about any thing.
The 1 in 8 figure refers to a hill start. You also need to know the kerbweight of the car, ideally you are looking for the max weight of the caravan to be around 85% of the kerbweight of the car.
The max tow weight is just a nominal figure based on the car starting on a 1 in 8 hill in ideal conditions. In practise you should not tow anywhere near that weight of caravan with that car. To keep within gross train weight you will be very limited with car payload. Further prob is early mk3 Berlingos only have 55kg towbar max download which is inadequate for 1300kg caravan. Later mk3s have 70kg download.
I towed with XTR 110 but only 900kg caravan which is ideal weight for that car.
If you want to stay with Cit then 2litre diesel C4 Picasso might do the job for a reasonable price but check tow weights. Otherwise something like Ford S Max. If you want a hire behicle to shift caravan then a 4x4 truck could well have a towbar. You will need to have passed your test before ‘97 to have B+E licence though.
That 2 engines failed in 6mnths in any specific car does in no way suggest that make/model of car is worse than any similar car. It does suggest there is a particular story associated with that specific car that needs to be related fully before one can make any assumptions at all.
If the op wants a used car suitable for towing a 1300kg caravan within a £4k budget then he takes a chance of large repair bills whatever he buys & should judge any car individually paying particular attention to service history.

VW Estate (Passat) .... engines last forever ... great towers, and loads of space.
Dont tell my mate that, he's had 2 engines fail in six months lol
No doubt there's the odd VW that fails ... c'est la vie ...
However, if you don't go below a 1.9 TD, and it has a decent service history ... it's probably a good bet.
My current one is only four years old .... but the one before did 275,000, and was still driving and towing sweetly, until I wrote it off with a lamp-post ... (don't ask!).
At the Caravan and Camping show last year, the people giving out free towing weight information were saying how the 85% rule was an antiquated idea pushed by people who still remember the ford Anglia as the ideal family car. Nowadays with modern technology towing is safe up to you allowed weights. Weight distribution is far more important with modern vehicles.
Don't shoot the messenger this is the advice given.
