Personally I don't use or need one, there has been a previous post Here Perhaps I am lucky that I can reach, I appreciate not all can do due to height or other physical limitations. If you google "awning tensioners" you see that there have been plenty of comments regarding bending poles etc.

I use the awning companion, bit fiddly but works well for me, I have the Hercules tensioner that came with the awning, can’t seem to get on with it
