We may have to sell our beautiful coachman vip, we love her, but we need a fixed bed set up now. We have seen a van we really like, but the part X offer, isn’t very much. So thinking of selling it privately, but not sure how, as the storage place doesn’t allow visitors for this purpose, is it always the case that you get a lot more selling private than part x price, trying to weigh up if it’s worth the hassle.
Also our van is two hour drive away, which complicates things.

I always sell private the ring round for best price new. You can play dealers against each other as they wantt your business. Sort out exact model you want so they know you are serious. You can ask if they do price match or beat your best price. It has always worked for me.Last time I got just over 10% off plus mover and Tyron bands.

She’s 2005 model and we aren’t buying a new caravan, just new to us. The model we looking at it, isn’t widely available, which doesn’t help matters
What’s the normal depreciation on a caravan, anyone know.?

Hiya, I read your post with interest but I'm not sure whether you have much option under the circumstances! If that was me I'd just swallow hard and accept the PX offer. The only other alternative might be to find some temporary storage on a more casual basis; a farm compound for example. Personally, I'm not very keen on having strangers coming to the house anyway so I usually have to accept the trade-in price offered, though it's always worth trying to find another dealer who might offer you a bit more for your Coachman. Good luck with your new caravan!

Part exchange is going to save a lot of hassle especially with the caravan being in storage which we have exactly the same dilemma so we just decided to do the easiest thing and accept what the dealer offerred as part exchange for a younger model. However, if you do want to attempt to sell privately then the best solution is to find a company or church with a private car park, explain the situation and give them a donation for the privelage of using their car park just for one day probably best on a weekend. When you advertise, you then stipulate that the caravan will be available to view from a particular time in the morning to a time in the afternoon strictly prior to a telephone call arrangement so people with no interest don't just turn up being nosey. Ask for their surname so if they turn up you know they are genuine and any interested party can then view and make an offer if they so wish but it's going to be worth a £20 donation if you achieve the price you want.
Make sure that if the car park owners are not available on the day of the sale that you obtain written authorisation and a contact telephone number just in case the Police happen to turn up and try move you off on the grounds of trespassing.
If you can get a few hundred quid more for your caravan by selling privately then it's worth the hassle just for one day but if it doesn't sell for the asking price then it's back to plan B.

There are caravan dealers that will sell your van on your behalf. We have friends did this last Spring and got much more than what they were offered in part ex, even after the dealers cut, and they didnt have the bother of fetching it out of storage for people to view.

Most private buyers will always want to see it at your house so they know you are who you say you are. It might be stolen.

When we have bought new from a dealer we have always been given a PX price and a non PX price so we can try and sell in the meantime but take the PX if we can't better it.

Private will probably be half as much again.

Selling is always going to be a problem if your caravan is in storage miles away, so it might be best to take the part-ex even though a private sale will probably give you more.

How do sellers who live in blocks of flats or old terraced houses with no parking get on? Navver is right about people wanting to see it at your home.

We had a coachman 470 vip and loved it our best ever van .
We sold it to have fixed bed . We had so many problems not with fixed beds but with the van . Water leaking etc.
3 years later we sold it and went back to a two berth but a swift as we couldn’t get a coachman in model we wanted at the time .

We have always part exchanged due to hassle of trying to sell privately.
But after owning a coachman vip take care what you buy . Unless it is another coachman .
I will say we are very happy with our swift though .

please please please, look at the overall package price.

dont look at what the part x price is. Look at it his way. he could make it look better on paper and increase the partx price, but then you wont get such a good deal on screen price.

So look at the final price he is asking for, and make sure that is realistic.

Sure you can sell it privately and you might get a bit more...thus you will have more cash....but what is your time worth. It might be better to take the deal....that is of course assuming that the overall package is good.

don't forget that they have to build in the VAT somewhere, and its a balancing act to get the trade-in and sale as favourable as possible for the customer so that the dealer makes something too.

I agree, take some good photos and give an accurate description.

I have just bought from

http://www.kenmorecaravans.co.uk/

They give extras a private seller cannot give. Ask to speak to Mark or Sally.

Located just over the hill from you, J25 M62.

Good luck.

List on ebay auction with reserve price set at price a bit above what you have been offered for trade in to cover ebay fees. Ensure caravan is clean & take plenty of inside & outside photos. If you can’t do viewing during auction be responsive to bidders questions by message & phone. At this time of yr you might get a suprisingly good price.

I agree with what you say Opensauce, but would anyone buy without viewing though, as I know I wouldn't.

Nothing wrong with bidding without viewing Colin provided there is a good phone rapport with seller & he answers all questions fully. If caravan is not what seller has claimed it is when you arrive ie “not as described” then leave it. Do not pay anything upfront obviously. Pay cash once you have checked caravan.

That is exactly how I bought my current one. It was 100miles away. I wouldn’t go much further than that to buy a caravan.

I wouldn't go more than 100 miles either, and unless it was something really special, I probably wouldn't go that far. The last one I went about 20 miles and the one I have now came from probably less than 10 miles away.

No way would I buy a caravan without a good prod and a poke though, even a £500 one like my last one. Damp meter, a look at everything, and a good look underneath too, especially tyres. I would want to be confident it would get me home at least.

I would be furious if someone successfully bid on my caravan then didn't pay for it. When I sold my last one on Ebay, I made it clear that if someone won it, they had bought it, and I would have left them very negative feedback if they didn't. I welcomed any request to view it before bidding though.
