Caravans don't require insurance in the way cars do, but car insurance companies will always say (assuming you've declared you're towing) that the caravan on the back has nothing to do with them.

This means that damage or loss to your 'van is down to you, or that if the caravan was somehow responsible for an accident you personally would be sued. If an injury was caused, or worse, this could be for hundreds of thousands of £££, plus you'd need to pay for your own legal defence. If the accident is someone else's fault, no-one except you is going to chase them for recompense.

For a couple of hundred ££ for an insurance policy, I'd say it was a no-brainer.

Answer is just one. Insure caravan with any well known company & read the small print first. Cost is usually extra for abroad use. Most will require caravan is serviced every yr or 2yrs & most will require wheelclamp & hitch lock to be fitted when caravan is parked. Most storage yards require that owner insures their caravan.

I don't believe this is entirely true. When hooked up and towing, the car and caravan are a unit. Therefore car insurance would pay for 3rd party liability, but not for damage to the van itself, which is covered by separate caravan insurance.

As ever though, best check the attitude of your car insurance company to towing.
