Hi
I loved the Lunar Delta years ago.
Great van lots of extras, but most i looked at did have damp.
Over the years they may have improved but they had the nick name leaking Lunar.
Saying that Bailey and other makes are all about the same.
As Marg6 stated, check it out, whatever make of van, and get it tested before buying, even from a dealer.
We have had a 2016 Clubman SI from new and really like the van. I wouldn’t have another Lunar though.
Nor would we use the dealer we got it off again. Both Lunar and the dealer were useless.
As to what we would buy if we came to change I would struggle to say at this point.
Not a Bailey as the locker arrangement wouldn’t suit us. Not a Swift as I’m not keen on their plastics and finishing.
Coachman were looking hopeful until they went down the lose the front locker route,
I don’t want anything 8ft wide either so best stick with the one we’ve got now we’ve sorted all the problems and cured the damp and the floor delamination. Cured wiring problems and a 13 pin plug replacement. No help from either the dealer or manufacturer, but I suppose once you get it something like perhaps its prudent to hang on to it for a bit,
Nothing wrong with Lunar caravans any more than any other brand, all brands seem to have problems directly associated with a particular production period or model. When you really analyse it, very little of the caravan is actually manufactured by the brand owner, they merely assemble bought in parts. Chassis and running gear are Alko, appliances are Thetford, Dometic, Truma etc., even interior cabinets and external lockers seem to come from a common source. What you get to choose between brands is no more than styling and minor variations on layout. What may be a bigger factor is construction method with GRP or Aluminium walls as a choice, pros and cons to both, so no definitive deciding factor there either.
Bought my Lunar Cosmos (dealer special Quasar) as a two year old pre-owned and been very happy indeed with it for a couple of years now, no inherent faults or failings. In fact the very pedantic independent engineer I had do it's annual service, said it was perfect and faultless.
Word of caution about pre-owned Lunars with regard to warranty, the new Lunar brand owners have imposed some restrictions with regard to vans manufactured by old brand owner. But that may be of no concern to you whatsoever, very few of the vans (of all brands) that I looked at before making my purchase had ANY manufacturers warranty in effect anyway as they had had the warranty invalidated by a lack of service record (there's no 'catching up' to recover the warranty, if the service record isn't complete, correct, and within stipulated service period, that's it, no manufacturers warranty)! The terms of warranty and transfer to second and subsequent owners are quite strict and very few of the nearly new vans I looked at qualified to have any warranty transferred! Caveat Emptor!
Rather than be concerned about the Lunar brand, think you should concentrate on the particular individual van you are considering purchasing, and it's condition and history, the dealership you are buying from (caravan dealerships seem to be even dodgier than s/h car dealers!), ensuring they are trustworthy and willing to support your purchase if you do have issues. If purchasing from a dealer, you by law have a kind of warranty, in that it must be as described and of merchantable quality, and remain functional for a reasonable period, the liability rests with the vendor, but that doesn't mean they will do anything willingly! Many s/h vans from dealers come with a insurance based warranty, which may be of some value depending on small print.
Is Lunar better or worse than any other brand, IMO not really! Found a lot less trivial faults like broken/faulty cabinet catches in the Lunars I looked at than Swift group products, and the build felt a little more robust, but the layout, style, extras from the dealer special spec, the condition of the van, it's relatively light MTPLM, and a very good price swung my decision to purchase. Since purchase found out the dealership is regarded as pretty s**te, but fortunately never had to put them to the test for any repairs!
You are very fortunate not to have had to put them to the test for repairs Monty15 - I sure wouldn’t recommend it.
As you say though in the end I suppose buy the van you like. I have a friend who has had a Lunar, a Bailey and a Swift since I’ve known him and he wasn’t happy with the service he got from the dealer for any one of them.
You pays your money etc. I think on balance for customer service caravan main dealers in my experience are definately worse than car main dealers when it comes to customer service or lack thereof. They’re alike in that once they have your dosh they lose interest in you very quickly.
