As you never had anything writing regarding the condition of the unit you cannot use the Misrepresentation Act to claim anything.
Your best bet is to get an Approved Workshop Scheme technician to give the caravan a good check over and to see if it is worth salvaging.
Never trust a friend in regards to money. We learnt the hard way also losing thousands of pounds.

If its had a full service, that should give a good idea of the 'damage', and what needs fixing.

Hi all. Thanks for all the advice. Unfortunately i dont take out any extras on my insurance policies like legal but it sounds like it wouldnt be much use even if I did. I am just going to have to suck it up and get on with it. It is no wonder that people are so suspicious of everyone and everything!

Please do not be put off by this one bad experience. As suggested, get a technician from the Approved Scheme to do the damp check and yo give you an estimate of the cost of a repair. Here is a link to the Scheme AWS Please do not get some one who claims to be a caravan technician as they may end up costing you even more money! If it is going to cost up to 1500 then it may be worth repairing. Get the worst part done first and then the rest as and when you can afford it.
You never know it may not be all that expensive to repair and you may have many happy holidays away in the caravan.

What an awful trick to play on a friend. Some people are just despicable. That is a lot of money for what sounds like a wreck. Sadly, if it's as bad as that I would think it is way beyond economic professional repair, but do get it checked just in case it's not as bad as it seems. The big cost of caravan repairs is labour, which is why DIY can be so much cheaper. Cost of parts is often negligible. Caravans are relatively simple structures, but repairing them can be very time-consuming.

Colin

That's not bad considering! I feared it would be many times that. I hope it all goes well for you and you have many happy times with it, despite the terrible start.

i would seriously suggest you get a few more quotes on the repair costs, just from what you have said on here on the first post 2 new tyres = 150, new battery 100 brake service = 200, that doesnt leave much for the wood work to be repaired correctly/safely/securely

Is the person qualified to do the work as many cowboys out there that claim they are experts? You do not want to throw good money away for bad. From your earlier description it seem that the repairs would cost more than 1000?

You say you arent having the windows done. But at the outset you said I opened all the windows on a hot day to find that they were falling in. The whole front was literally falling in in bits as the wood was totally rotten. The side window was starting to do the same and the seals were caving in . If its dropping to bits around the windows, i cannot see how they can be 'left', even temporarily.

Obviously I have been a total fool but if you cant trust a friend of nearly 20 years, where does that leave us all? I have learnt a very hard lesson. Thanks for all your advice. Xx
