Hello Everyone, we are currently looking at possibly buying a Bailey Pegasus Palermo 2016 caravan and wondered if anyone on here has any advice on these caravans?

I have a VW transporter 102bhp to tow it with does anyone have any experience of towing anything similar with a similar van?

thanks

Hi, can't help with the caravan itself but I wonder about the suitability and legality of the outfit.

The Palermo is a twin axle caravan so the MTPLM is quite high, probably 1750-1800kgs so requires a heavy tow car probably with a kerb weight around 2000kgs. You haven't given any weights for the VW but I'd be surprised if it could tow such a heavy caravan especially with only 102bhp available. What are the kerb weight and max tow limit of the VW?

I tow 1500kg with a 150bhp diesel and it's fine but it was definitely easier with a 175bhp that I used to have. I think you need to look at a lighter caravan or a heavier car. You will also need a B+E licence for this sort of outfit.

Rob

I agree with Rob. 102bhp seems very low to be pulling such a heavy caravan. I think it would struggle and I'm not sure it's even a legal match. I'm not sure I'd want to tow my caravan with it, and my caravan is less than 1,000kg. For a caravan such as that I would be looking for something with 180bhp+ or looking for a much lighter caravan.

I have my B+E so from that perspective I am fine.. The comparison on towcar info says it is compatible but with caution, weights as below which is 86% towing ratio. with regards power I will probably get a pendle remap which will push it to 140 bhp which should resolve the power.

1773 kg 2062 kg

I tow a avante 556 currently which is 1450kg and it tows perfectly fine.

Towcar info is notoriously unreliable as the vehicle weights usually are not for UK vehicles, you need to use the actual weights of your vehicle which you should find in the handbook, on the V5 and the weight plate on the van.

What do the 1773 and 2062 refer to? If the 1773 is the kerb weight then the caravan is almost a 100% match.

Thanks, I was confused as I asked for the kerb weight and max tow for the VW. 86% match should be fine but I think you need a lot more power to make towing easier.

Colin's post has reminded me that we towed 900 kg with a 92bhp engine and that was very hard work requiring lots of gear changes.

Years ago in the early 1980s I tried towing a 1960s Sprite Musketeer caravan weighing well under a ton with a 1971 VW van. Anything above a very light headwind and I had to drop down to third gear or it got slower and slower. It wasn't that quick to begin with.

These days I tow my under 1,000kg Elddis with a 150bhp Nissan X Trail and I barely know its there, which is how I like it.

Whilst it’s not a poor match, I wouldn’t say it’s a particularly good match, I think you would need plenty of time to pull out of junctions and into motorways, acceleration would be pretty poor.

Bigger issue would be hill starts and loading weights I suspect.

We tow our palermo with a Vito Crew Van so quite similar. 116CDi at 161BHP

I wouldnt want to tow it with less power, but I guess it is possible. It will never be first off at the lights, but has enough power to get up the steepest of hills.
I like to keep a reasonable speed and still have enough to push it a bit and get me out of trouble, whcih this does, hence why I wouldnt want less.

The Palermo tows well - but if you load it badly she is a pig, but that will be the same for anything of course.

Just make sure you arent going to exceed your gross train weight as plated on the vehicle when all is fully loaded.
