Hello is it possible to screw mount a 3 glass wine holder onto the internal wall of a caravan. I'm unsure of which type of screw or other to use, as don't want to go through the wall and out the other side.
There seems to be a number of different materials used in caravan wall construction, which to some extent is age and brand related, so details of your van may be useful for good and relevant advice. One thing for sure, the internal wall boards are lightweight and thin whatever the material!
As a design engineer, I notice odd details that often bypass most people, and one thing that has struck me with caravans is that virtually nothing load bearing is screwed TO internal walls by the manufacturer, anything needing attachment is affixed THROUGH the wall from the (now inaccessible after outer skin fitted) outside face, with no doubt hidden reinforcing plates/batons supporting the wall board. On my van, anything 'surface mounted' by screwing to a surface is affixed to a (thicker) cabinet wall rather than thin caravan wall.
The distance between inside and outside skin is really quite small, perhaps only 20-25mm on my van where I can see both, so short screws are essential, and many (most) ordinary cavity wall fixings would likely be too long as well. You also have to consider 'services' like wiring and plumbing that may be hidden behind the wall, I've had little luck with metal/wiring/baton detectors in my van when tracing wiring, as just too many metal fixings that give false alarms.
As general guide, something like a chipboard screw would likely be the most suitable, with perhaps a pilot hole to minimise the disruption/crumbling of wall board material and ensure screw gets full depth grip, be careful when pilot drill breaks through it doesn't contact outer skin!
Im not sure id screw direct to the wall. You dont want it dislodging with the glasses in. Is there a nearby piece of timber, or the possibility of fitting one at the back of the cupboard to fix to?
Autosleeper Clubman Motorhomes had (and still have!) a fitted 4-wine-glass rack, with those clips to hold the glasses. Some people think it was naff, others didn’t - Love it or hate it…
Yeah my previous motorhome had one brilliant, downsized to 2 berth caravan due to extra requirements to drive larger motorhomes over 70. Will look inside the cupboard that's a really good idea, thanks.
Thanks for your reply, am thinking inside a cupboard is probably best n your ur suggestion about a piece of ply seems to fit the bill. Are you suggesting sticking with something like no more nails?

yes that should do the trick
You want something thick enough to take the screws. I think wallboard is only maybe 4mm - no thicker than the walls themselves. Maybe a bit of 9mm ply behind it. So you get strength and decor at the same time. Or a square of 15mm white contiplas? Let us know what you go with.
Hi went with a strip of ply I had in the garage, stained it with wood dye and stuck to the inside of the cupboard with no more nails glue. Works n looks well. Thanks all for your replies.
As well is two words!
