I regularly go over my tow bar with a medium emery/wet n dry sheet then a damp cloth to remove dust, I avoid the use of chemicals, slovents etc wherever possible

I keep some white spirit in a small spray bottle in the boot.A squirt both on the ball and up into the female part on the A frame. Wipe off and sorted

The downside is that you can then hear your wife talking.

White spirit does contain oil, so I wouldn't use that. Brake cleaner spray or meths would be best.

I’d avoid spraying anything up there, no matter what frame of mind she’s in. She’ll do more than talking

spacer shims are available to place behind slightly worn friction pads to push them tighter onto the towball, much cheaper than the replacement pads.
they fit onto the stalk of the pads pushing them further onto the towball
