nothing of any weight! so the lightweight deckchairs and a lightweight table and the foam jigsaw type mats for the awning, basically stuff that is very light in weight but big and bulky

You'd be surprised at how little weight placed right at the rear of a van can upset it's towing stability!

I found about 12Kg shifted from just in front of axle to rear wall wardrobe really upset my normally rock solid stable towing characteristics! - definite signs of tail trying to wag dog! I stopped on journey and moved the item forward again to regain my normal nice easy stable tow!

As marg6 says, best used for light and bulky stuff. - heaviest items as far forward, and lightest towards back. Keep all as far forward as possible as well, and pack in such a way it can't move backwards in transit.

It's a bit 'suck it and see', the longer the caravan, the more you'll likely notice it having some effect. Personally don't want anything that encourages snaking, and if that means empty space at back of van, so be it.

Thank you. That has confirmed what we thought. We are seasoned Folding camping campers, but not towed a caravan in years.

unfortunately some modern vans with fixed rear beds have tons of storage room under the fixed bed at the rear.. doors ether side which go right the way through.. kind of wasted space in a way..

We have a fixed rear bed and basically only store a few light items under it such as a spare lightweight camping chair, a ping pong set, a big parasol, a body board and one of those aluminium roll top tables. It is all organised towards the foot of the bed and there is nothing at all under the half of the bed nearest the back. We used to have a caravan with a more central bed and kept loads under it but it is just not sensible to have much weight at the back.

Just thinking about this as I am writing and I realise that we haven’t used anything I have just mentioned, apart from the roll top table, in years! It may be time for a clear out!

not really as once your parked up, and not bothering with the awning, then rather than filling your car up with everything such as deck chairs and awning/ground sheet etc etc at least you have somewhere to put them that is out of the way and more secure than leaving under the caravan
