Colin you are correct in that the vehicle you drive when you reach 70 will have a maximum weight of 3500kg but you can still tow trailers up to 3500kgs on top of that if your vehicle allows it.

Rob
Maybe I'm wrong, but as I understand it the maximum train weight must not exceed 3,500kg. If I am wrong then the law seems a bit pointless to me. I could drive a car and trailer with a total weight of 7 tons, but not a private truck or bus weighing 7 tons.
It doesn't really matter that much to me personally though, as my car and caravan together weigh well under 3500kg. But it may affect others.
It's all very confusing. According to the Gov.UK website I still have category C1 until my car licence runs out on 2nd Sept. 2023. This is what it says;
Category : C1 Start date: before 30 Jan 1976 End date: 2 Sep 2023 Restrictions apply.
Description
You can drive vehicles weighing between 3,500 and 7,500kg (with a trailer up to 750kg), with no more than 8 passengers and a driver
I don't know whether I will lose C1 when my car licence comes up for renewal.
I have renewed mine 4 times now and chose not to keep my C licence. My friend same age kept his C licence to be able to drive his 3850 kg motorhome but has to have medicals to keep it going.
To keep a C or D licence going you definitely need to have an annual medical if over 70. What I am not sure about is whether a C1 or D1 licence continues along with a B licence. If I look at my licence on the Gov.UK website, my D licence expired on 2nd September last year because I didn't renew it, but my D1 licence and C1 licence don't expire until 2nd September 2023 when my car licence expires. Will they renew automatically when I renew my car licence on that date, or will they too expire? It isn't clear. I guess I won't know for certain until September 2023.
Folks we're ending up, as fairly normal , of veering slightly off topic.
------------- XVI yes?
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
Seems strange that the C1 and D1 carry on until the car licence expires, when I'll be 74, instead of expiring when my D licence expired last year. I still find it annoying that my railway medical doesn't cover the PSV, especially as it's more thorough than the PSV ones I used to have. They were rarely more than box-ticking and getting a doctor's signature on my form.
The bloke only asked about caravan recommendations in his first post. He might have wanted it for a 'static', or someone else to tow it. So many jumping on the 'depends on the car' bandwagon - and half of it incorrect to boot. We should let the fella decide himself what he can/is able to tow. And limit the 'advice' pertaining to the question. Bet he wishes he'd never asked!

Far too many people seem confused with what is guidance and what is law. the 85% of kerbweight is guidance only and not particularly relevant guidance either. A badly loaded trailer (including caravans, which are just basically large lightweight box trailers) at 85% of kerb weight is less safe than a well loaded trailer at the vehicle's maximum towing capacity.
The OP's Sharan has a towing capacity of between 1800kg and 2200kg depending on the model year. There are a few examples of 4 berth vans less than 1800kg here. https://www.highbridgecaravans.co.uk/products/caravans-up-to-4-berth-up-to-1800-kg
