Hi, my running lights and side lights have stopped working on my caravan, however the break lights and indicators are still working, any suggestions or ideas on how to fix it would be massively appreciated
Thank you
Have you checked the bulbs, plug and socket? Start with those and let us know how you get on, it's probably the plug as it's unlikely that all the bulbs have blown.
Presumably the car lights are still working properly.
Cheers for the reply, yeah car bulbs are all ok, and the socket seems fine I think, it's just strange the indicators and break lights work, just the side lights and the red running lights on the back are not working, I'm new to owning a caravan so I'm pretty clueless, lol
do you know anyone with a trailer that you can plug into your car ,to prove the car is wired ok, then can you get the person to plug their car into your caravan, to see if the fault points to the caravan, if you can prove its the caravan, first start at the plug, (is it a 7pin or a 13pin socket?)
check the cable from the plug to where it enters the van, these can get "chewed" by rodents and rabbits. after that its a case of checking the lights
Are both sides not working? Strange if so as they are usually on different circuits. I think I would check the earth connection on the caravan. A cheap multi-meter will come in handy, you can usually get them for around £10-£15.
i lost my van running lights once.. you are right colin about them normally being on two seperate left and right circuits.. but mine were just on the one circuit in the car.. in my case it was a fuse just the one and i lost all side lights.. mind you my car sidelights were out as well..
It could be a loose connection in the caravan plug. As suggested if you can eliminate the car first it will point you in the right direction.
A cheap multimeter or even a 12v test lamp will enable you to fault find.
Check between the car socket earth pin then the sidelight pins.
If all ok its the van.
If you know someone with a van or trailer you can connect its even easier!
The pin allocation for 7 and 13 pin set ups are easy to find online or may be in the caravan handbook if you have one.
