Hi all, we have just bought our first caravan and need some advice regarding breakdown cover. We have existing breakdown cover for both mine and my husbands cars with Start Rescue. They say if the car breaks down then the caravan will be recovered but we will not be covered if the caravan breaks down. Not sure if this is a daft question but should we get the caravan covered as a separate entity?

I too have been with Start Rescue for years. They are very good and a lot cheaper than either the AA or RAC and I can't see any difference between what they and the "big two" offer. As the O/P says, they will come out if the car breaks down, but not if the caravan breaks down, as I'm sure is the case with the AA & RAC. I don't know anyone who offers breakdown cover for caravans, although there may well be such a company.

as long as the caravan is connected to the car at the time of a breakdown be that car or caravan then they will attend (aa wise)

My beef with these companies is that I have to join a club to get the cover, for us this is a total waste of money as we only use private sites.

its hardly a waste of money at the time of breakdown tho!

recently my husbands motorbike broke down and we had to take out cover, and although we already have mayday it doesnt cover his motorbike, so had to buy aa cover to get him home, that cost us £258, it would have been the same price if it had been the car needing recovering too. Now compare that to taking out mayday, and having to join the caravan club to be able to access that, we would have saved at least £100 and about 3 hrs trying to sort things out!

Well it is as I don’t use their sites. They charge you extra for the cover plus paying for membership of a club that I have no intention of using.
If your husband had personal cover, it would cover him for any vehicle, or one that he was a passenger in.

We don't use their sites either, but we use CLs all the time. We have cover with Green Flag/Mayday and it's excellent. What kind of sites do you use clbewi? Have looked at your reviews now. Not our type of sites, each to their own.

the fact that you dont use their sites is neither here nor there, at the end of the day it comes down to pound signs. it would give you break down cover from 1 mile from your house, to your holiday and back again the AA dont do that nor the rac or any other breakdown service i know of.

at the time of my hubbys bike conking out on him, they do not cover motorbikes, so we couldnt use them for it, the next best option was to join the aa on the day and get him and bike recovered to home

Yes each to there indeed. We wouldn’t use CLs not our type. In fact we don’t need any breakdown for the car either as it’s covered by the manufacturer, but won’t entertain a caravan in tow hence the extra cover.

They do actually cover the caravan if it breaks down as last year a friend of mine started out his 180 mile journey and about half way through the journey one of the caravan wheels locked up solid. He thought it was a seized up wheel bearing so he called out Mayday rescue who came out, put his caravan on a low loader and took him to his destination in the midlands. On inspection of the underlying fault it turned out to be a component related to the ATC unit which had dislodged and made contact with the caravan wheel causing it jam bringing it to a sudden halt. Apparently it was a just a 5 minute job to re-secure the offending component but this is concrete proof to confirm that the breakdown cover is for both car and caravan in the event of a breakdown.

they do cover motorbikes if you take out "personal cover", that covers the person ,even if you are traveling in someone- elses vehicle, or whatever vehicle you are using, add on trailer cover, and the wife , and you are totally covered for everything, for just over £100 , used it several times, over the years even used it for a friends bike, and said i was on pillion,
why wouldnt you, if you use multiple vehicles

I'll have to contact Start Rescue to find out if they do too. I wasn't aware that anyone did.

That's great news but not what Start told me when I rang them. They said they will recover the caravan if it is attached to our car and the car is faulty but not if the caravan is faulty
