I am just wondering how you would overfill it? There are usually only two types in modern caravans and motorhomes. Those that are connected to the mains system within the van, so impossible to overfill. And those that are filled from the outside of the unit of which there is a limit to how much you can add to the tank. So pretty much likely that you can't overfill?
If you are filling it through the small door on the side of the van it will just overflow out that opening.

Agree with previous posts, on my Thetford once the level reaches the external filler level, that's it, adding any more it simply spills out, so impossible to 'overfill' under normal circumstances.
I usually fill mine to the filler level and never had a problem. IIRC, the filler level is very close to stated tank capacity when I've used a known capacity watering can to fill.
Seems like no need to only fill with a measured volume!
I took the OP at his literal word, thinking in terms of filling tank on site, BUT certainly Thetford advise not to travel with a full tank as risk of leakage into bathroom.
I usually travel with maybe half or less full tank, and never had a problem.
I don't think I overfilled to be honest I did however clean the area with the hose where the cassette goes and think I should have just wiped it out rather than wash it with the hose. So my own fault really bit luckily I dried it all up as there wasn't loads n I won't be doing that again in a hurry. Thank u all who replied 👍🏻😊
