Hi. I have a double wall socket and both of the rocker switches don't engage properly they seem to be loose and don't engage as they should. Has anyone any idea what the cause might be. Thank you.
Impossible to say definitively, but most common faults with socket switches in general (nothing especially unique about caravan sockets, other than styling) are:
Heat damage (from heavy loads and/or excessive contact arcing) has damaged/distorted internal components.
Spring(s) on detent mechanism have weakened/broken.
Casing (behind fascia) has broken/cracked/loosened allowing rocker to become 'loose'.
Potentially those sockets are now a fire hazard, as likely the switch is not toggling correctly, consequently contacts are not making proper contact and may overheat!
Caravan sockets are often 'modular', with separate carrier plate, socket and bezel, unlike most domestic sockets which are 'all in one' design. Matching the make/model to get the correct replacement parts (nominally only the switched socket part should need replacing) can take a little time and detective work, and of course, with an older van the parts may no longer be available and a complete replacement necessary. That said, I can't say I recall ever seeing a switched version of socket of typical modular caravan type! - good possibility it's an ordinary domestic socket! A photo would make identification much easier.
Repair/replacement is nothing a competent DIY'er with suitable knowledge of mains wiring can't tackle, but if in doubt (and you did ask the question!), may be best entrusted to a professional. Both electric shock and fire risk if done incorrectly!
They are especially useful in caravans and schools etc as the plastic is polycarbonate which is virtually unbreakable. The also came in many different colours.
i think the caravan ones should have hidden front screws, some have little plastic inserts for the screws ,others have clip-on front covers, either way you cant see or touch the screw heads.
dunno if that is just for apearances ,or if its mandatory in caravans.
I used to fit clipsel sockets at one time they was a available in 16 different colours I found them good quality ..nice idea too was the screw covers..I have found there are 2 shades of biege used in caravans one lighter than the other..Gary
